BNP Paribas Tennis Classic

BNP Paribas Tennis Classic

Web Design & Development

The BNP Paribas Tennis Classic takes place every year at one of London’s hidden gems – the Hurlingham Club. Managed by IMG, The BNP Paribas Tennis Classic offers the perfect opportunity for ATP Tour players to practice before the big game at Wimbledon and also retired tennis legends to entertain the fans.

My part in the project:

Launch Year: 2012

Client: IMG (Crafted @ Red Giant)

BNP Paribas Tennis Classic

The launch of the new BNP Paribas Tennis Classic was an important upgrade to the client’s workflow. The fresh, built-in features allowed IMG to reorder the content boxes and help them prioritise the user journey, which would continuously change from one month to the other. During the event, visitors expect to easily find information about the timings, order of play, results and maybe book a place for the next day, if available. All these updates became a possible operation for IMG, thanks to the newly-introduced layout.

Being a website for an event, the dates, CTAs and contact details had to be visible on all the pages, so the header was the perfect place for that. BNP Paribas’ requirements with regards to the logo usage were embedded into the website’s design. The menu links, displayed on a fresh green background colour were in an unmissable contrast with the “Book Now” button.

Presented to the public as “The Best Kept Secret in Tennis”, this lovely annual tennis event had to incorporate on its online presence the summery, action-centered images, and the best way to do that was by using a jQuery slider, which didn’t disappoint. The “Latest News” section was populated with content by the IMG team. The home page included excerpts from the latest 3 news stories, with the content automatically populated from the individual posts. The uniqueness of this project resided in the integration of the tennis players’ profiles and the game results.

Launched in 2012, the BNP Paribas Tennis Classic website was one of the first responsive websites I designed and built. Since then I never looked back at the old ways. Smartphones gained ground in the years that followed and they are here to stay. The Google Analytics stats have spoken!

THE CLIENT IS ALWAYS RIGHT

“ A HUGE thank you to you all for helping to make the BNP Paribas Tennis Classic launch such a great success. The website, advertising, HTMLs… everything looks brilliant and we’ve had some great feedback! ”

EON Magazine – the official magazine devoted to CCP Games’ massively-multiplayer online sci-fi game, EVE Online. The magazine was produced by MMM Publishing under license from CCP Games and sold via the EVE Online website. Distributed to more than 80 countries worldwide, EON Magazine was launched in 2005 and discontinued in 2013, after 30 issues.

EON Magazine online store

If you’re a gamer and sci-fi fan, you might already know what this project is about. Eve Online is a space-based, persistent world massively multiplayer online role-playing game created by CCP Games. EON Magazine was the official EVE online magazine that featured all the latest EVE news, community updates, players’ profiles, interviews, ship reviews, guides and chats with CCP personalities plus loads more.

At the time I started with this unique project, I was a little bit of gamer myself, so I couldn’t be more chuffed to be working on the design and development of EON Magazine online store. Build with Joomla! and VirtueMart, it was one of the most demanding projects I had the opportunity to work on partially due to the fact I was a one-(wo)man band and the deadline was quite aggressive. I only had one month to create a template design, develop and make the eCommerce store live, including testing plus integration of the WorldPay and PayPal payment gateways. Challenge accepted…and website delivered on time!

After the launch of the EON Magazine online store, I had to focus on creating newsletter templates, animated and static online banners and social media promotional campaigns. It basically meant my work wasn’t over…and I was glad it wasn’t.

The Ryder Cup is an international golf competition between teams from Europe and the United States. Every 2 years, 24 of the best golf players go head-to-head in match play competition, with the venue alternating between courses in the United States and Europe

Ryder Cup Hospitality

The Ryder Cup has become one of the world’s greatest sporting events and it’s a dream come true for any golfing fan to be close to the action. If you want to live every moment of the competition to the max, you would treat yourself with a hospitality experience. That’s where I had to step in and make the hospitality presentational website a useful online resource for anyone interested in purchasing such a unique package.

I had the occasion to work on the European Ryder Cup hospitality website in 2014 and again this year. As a natural progression and necessity, the most recent website has the content available in English and French, with the translation being manually added from the CMS. There are 4 different levels of hospitality packages, each with distinct features and can directly be purchased online, through the website. Besides the presentation of the hospitality packages, the website includes useful details about the golf course map (presented to the readers with the help of hotspots), transport and accommodation options, extra event info, a downloadable PDF hospitality brochure and direct contact details. A 2020 Ryder Cup registration of interest form gives visitors the opportunity to submit their interest in pre-purchasing tickets for the next Ryder Cup event.

Using the same responsive bespoke template built to incorporate Ryder Cup’s official guidelines, 2 more websites needed to coexist in order to serve adjacent purposes. If the first website serves to promote the official hospitality packages, the next 2 will help Ryder Cup’s partners and players find all the details in one place. All these were designed, built and delivered in record time.

The official website for the UK national commemorative events marking the Centenary of Passchendaele – The Third Battle of Ypres. The Centenary of Passchendaele: The Third Battle of Ypres

The Passchendaele commemorations took place near Ypres in Belgium, in July 2017. In delivering the final product for this historic event, I had to collaborate with the UK government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). This is the second challenge successfully completed (the first one was the creation of the official centenary commemorations for the Battle of the Somme in 2016), incorporating DCMS’ requirements in terms of design, security and hosting necessities.

The look and feel of the Passchendaele website had to resonate with the other official First World War Centenary websites, hence the First World War logo and the chosen font type. This website is perceived as an online resource that connects current and future generations with the lives, stories and impact of the First World War.

Slightly different from the Centenary of Passchendaele, the website for the official Centenary Commemorations for the Battle of the Somme (previously launched) was made available to the public in 2 languages: English and French, each translation being manually controlled using the back-end functionality.

DCMS’ hosting capacity request, to allow up to 10,000 visits per second, was one of the unique elements in this project. This was achieved by choosing a robust cloud hosting, stress tested in advance to meet government’s challenging requirements.

The final product had to include a secure system for storing personal, sensitive guest data to allow a greater understanding of the public needs and no compromises were done in delivering this important feature.

The site features a public ballot with direct links and integration with SeeTickets.

Red Giant Projects

A company that will always have a special place in my heart. Red Giant delivers 110% for every project they take on board: big or small. Their portfolio is mind-blowing and it would put to shame any small graphic design company.

I had the greatest opportunity to be fully welcomed in the Red Giant team and work on (almost) all of their web projects, including their own website. This I found to be one of the most challenging projects I ever worked on, because it felt extremely difficult to do them justice with only one design template. After many hours of analyzing the competition, dissecting the old website and the user behavior behind it, comparing the newest trends and wireframing, I finally found a pleasing solution: a clean, responsive and elegant design to tell Red Giant’s ongoing story. The mega menu under the “What we do” section lists Red Giant’s main services and it directly links to their individual pages.

Any visitor that explores the website would quickly discover the high-quality services Red Giant provides and hopefully trust them to deliver an impeccable marketing image.

Infinity Creative Media

Funded by the brilliant mind of Russ Lindsay, Infinity Creative Media was built on a new type of business model called Investor Funded Television (IFTV). The old Infinity Creative Media website wasn’t mobile friendly and the client wanted to be able to change its online content without the constant help of a web designer. That was the moment when we met, discussed and agreed on a new website layout. The final product included design elements requested by the client, like the bordered format of the template, a world map background image and the internal header images.

Using the new CMS functionality, Infinity Creative Media has now the power to change the content with ease, update page elements and add media objects as their heart’s desire. No more strings attached!

My part in the project:

IAPB

The redesign of the recently launched IAPB website was by far the biggest project I worked on. A simple website crawl revealed the magnitude of the content I had to take into consideration when migrating to the new platform (there were over 38.000 existing pages!). It was clear the user journey needed to be simplified. After a close collaboration with the lovely IAPB team, the sitemap was finally updated and the content was ready for design implementation.

A few of the unique features the new IAPB website brought to the table included an extensive document library containing around 1.000 digital documents from the eye health world, advanced search facility, AA accessibility tools, automatic translation, animated infographics, interactive JavaScript charts, MailChimp form integration, exclusive membership access and an advanced event calendar.

The responsive design of the new IAPB website came packed with a plethora of back-end functionality that made IAPB’s team a lot easier in managing content. Details like old links SEO-friendly redirection, SSL migration, the website’s XML sitemap, or social media integration were included in the final delivered product.

IAPB Vision Atlas

Eye health related websites don’t need to be boring and full of tabular data. That was the initial spark that ignited the current IAPB Vision Atlas website. The homework was to take IAPB’s documents and find the best way to present years of research. A lot of team work was involved in this project, but the final product was stunning: a responsive website that is more than capable to help any interested visitor understand the complexity of the eye health world.

There’s a little bit for everybody in the IAPB Vision Atlas website. You can start your journey by discovering the ocular structure with the help of an animated slider, continuing with the comparison of a healthy vision versus one affected by an eye condition, exploring the world of eye health from a different perspective, moving to smart tabular data and then enjoying some interactive charts and animated infographics, all created with one thing in mind: user experience.

My part in the project:

Launch Year: 2014

Client: The Centre for Teams (Crafted @ Red Giant)

Centre for Teams

The client’s biggest concern was how we could structure the large amount of services Centre For Teams has to offer and present it in a clean and easy way to the end user. After the initial discussions where we established the client’s services and requirements, I came up with a solution: a mega menu to incorporate all the subdivisions coming from the 3 types of programmes they offer – Programmes for Teams, for Leaders and for Coaches. By going down that route, not only did we simplify the user journey, but we also reduced the number of clicks required by users to reach their desired content. Centre For Teams’ mega menu also features inspirational background images, which are only visible on large devices (desktops & laptops).

While working on this project, I got attached to the parallax effect and the video backgrounds used harmoniously with the copy on the home page. The old habits, like using images to illustrate icons were left behind and replaced with the new kid in town: Font Awesome (A big thank you to the creators of that font)!

The launch of the new website (in 2014) was an immense leap forward and it helped Centre For Teams to increase their client portfolio and the number of unique online visitors.

Royal Windsor Horse Show

Royal Windsor Horse Show is a top equestrian event, which takes place every year in May on the private grounds of Windsor castle. The show raises the bar for every equestrian event by bringing to the table various international competitions, thrilling displays, a chic shopping village, mouthwatering food and an inviting children’s area packed with various activities perfect for a family day out!

The website behind such a beloved event had to keep up with its popularity. The creative is being refreshed yearly and adapted on the responsive web template before general tickets go on sale for the following year. Exhibitors, volunteers and media accreditations are all being handled using online forms that help the organizer to keep a meticulous order in their contact details. All the online newsletter submissions have been automatized to go directly into the organizer’s email marketing platform.

The back-end structure of the website was built to ease the client’s workflow and give maximum independence over the published content. The daily timetable, ticket prices, news articles, image gallery, opening times and even the exhibitors list can be amended by the organizer without any help from the developer.

Royal Windsor Horse Show’s daily highlights can be accessed directly from the home page with the help of an accordion animation. A 4-regions split slideshow directly tells you where you are and what you should expect from the show. The key sections of the website are visualized with the help of animated banners, which rejig depending on the screen size. A looping, web-optimized video background was introduced in the latest website version and it brings dynamism to the home page. The horizontal carousel available just before the footer displays all the show’s sponsors in a finite space. Simple and effective!

The Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebration

There’s no greater honour for a (fresh) British citizen than creating the The Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebration website! At least for me it isn’t. It’s pretty impressive to know the website has been accessed by almost 2 million people from around the globe and my lines of code helped the whole world get to one place, Windsor Castle, and celebrate Her Majesty’s 90th Birthday.

The palace-approved colour palette became an integral part of the event’s identity used on all the supporting marketing collateral. The website gracefully combined traditional elements like the logo, the subtle royal cream colour and the lovely drawings with modern trends like the vertical sliding menu, full-screen slideshow, CSS3 animations, sliding carousel, events timeline, image venue map with hotspots, count down timer, animated info circle or tabbed content.

Oh, and did I mention The Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebration was awarded the BAFTA for Best Live Event in 2017?! That’s BIG!

Olympia, The London International Horse Show

Held annually in December at one of the most iconic venues in town, Olympia, The London International Horse Show is the place to go and kick-start your Christmas holiday! The event covers a wide area of activities: 3 FEI World Cups, spectacular international displays, extreme driving, dog agility, TV coverage, holiday shopping and a grand Christmas finale where Santa always comes and greets you.

Behind this beloved equestrian event there’s a lot a work and the website needs to offer as much information as possible to the thousands of visitors. A new creative is launched every year, just before the tickets go on sale. The hosting behind the website has to cope with significant traffic spikes encountered during the event. The responsive feature has become a standard since 2013, when I have launched my first version of Olympia Horse Show website.

The highlights are displayed as a horizontal accordion, but if you’re interested in knowing all the details, you can go directly to the daily programme pages. There’s an entire online section dedicated to prices and available ticket types, accessible directly from the main menu.

The annual exhibitors, media accreditations and volunteers play an important part in the event and the organizer requested an easy online solution to manage and their details. The back-end functionality allows seamless form creation containing various field types; the perfect tool for the job! Obviously the submissions can be exported and used elsewhere if needed. All the newsletter submissions go directly into the client’s Adestra account, a feature made available by request. Email templates and online banners had to be designed and coded to help the client deliver their marketing messages. Always a pleasure for me (and I’m not sarcastic when I say it) – HPower team is fantastic! No wonder they won a BAFTA!
