The Centenary of Passchendaele: The Third Battle of Ypres

The Passchendaele commemorations took place near Ypres in Belgium, in July 2017. In delivering the final product for this historic event, I had to collaborate with the UK government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). This is the second challenge successfully completed (the first one was the creation of the official centenary commemorations for the Battle of the Somme in 2016), incorporating DCMS’ requirements in terms of design, security and hosting necessities.

The look and feel of the Passchendaele website had to resonate with the other official First World War Centenary websites, hence the First World War logo and the chosen font type. This website is perceived as an online resource that connects current and future generations with the lives, stories and impact of the First World War.

Slightly different from the Centenary of Passchendaele, the website for the official Centenary Commemorations for the Battle of the Somme (previously launched) was made available to the public in 2 languages: English and French, each translation being manually controlled using the back-end functionality.

DCMS’ hosting capacity request, to allow up to 10,000 visits per second, was one of the unique elements in this project. This was achieved by choosing a robust cloud hosting, stress tested in advance to meet government’s challenging requirements.

The final product had to include a secure system for storing personal, sensitive guest data to allow a greater understanding of the public needs and no compromises were done in delivering this important feature.

The site features a public ballot with direct links and integration with SeeTickets.
